Set in the early 1960s, Hairspray tells the story of a plus-sized girl Tracy who dreams of being a featured dancer on “The Corny Collins Show,” the Baltimore equivalent of “American Bandstand.” Corny Collins has problems of his own, as he’d like to integrate the show’s da…ncers against the wishes of the producer instead of relegating African Americans to a once-monthly appearance on Negro Day. Famous songs include: You Can’t Stop the Beat, Mama I’m a Big Girl Now, Good Morning Baltimore, and Welcome to the Sixties. Hairspray is a toe-tapping romp which presents a life-affirming message that it’s okay to be different and that progress occurs when we stand together.
